The wonderful blue-green colour of aquamarine comes from concentrations of metallic ions the crystals absorb while they grow in underground caves. Translucent to opaque, these aquamarine gemstones have pattern of light and dark greens mixed with occasional hints of pink and yellow. For elegant necklaces combine these beads with gold or silver spacer beads, tourmaline, citrine and garnet or with mother-of-pearl beads.

Aquamarine is routinely heated. This is a highly sensitive and precise process requiring that the stone be heated between 725 and 850 degrees farenheit. If the stone is overheated, it will permanently lose all its color. Aquamarines hardness is 7 at the Mohs scale but it is sensitive to heat, acids and ammonia. Use caution when cleaning with a steamer, hot water or ultrasonic agents. These methods can permanently damage stones with feathering or fractures. Aquamarine is best cleaned with mild soap, room temperature tap water and a soft toothbrush.
